Adult-only buildings challenged by Alberta group

Parents in Edmonton are challenging the legality of buildings which do not allow families but they face a battle with peace-loving retirees.

Alberta is reviewing human rights laws relating to age discrimination before the end of the year and the parents’ group wants that to include children which would mean an end to buildings that are currently only for adults.

However, the Calgary Herald reports that many condo owners where age limits are in place don’t want that to change.

The original court case which forced the province to review legislation was about stopping seniors being discriminated against based on their age but the latest challenge is set to be a bigger battle.

Other Canadian provinces allow buildings to be restricted to over 55s but there is no guarantee that Alberta will follow.
