The Chinese equivalent of the WhatsApp messaging app is becoming an important part of the foreign purchase of Canadian homes. The Vancouver Sun reports that WeChat includes a number of groups in which Chinese buyers swap information and listings for homes in Vancouver but there could be a less innocent side to it.
The British Columbia Real Estate Council told the Sun that it is aware of the app and how it could be used by unscrupulous sellers or brokers: if we became aware of licensees posting or exchanging information that appeared to be in contravention of the Real Estate Services Act, we would vigorously investigate,” deputy executive officer Larry Buttress said.
So far, the use of the app appears to be fully in compliance with the law and could offer realtors a new marketing opportunity, although there is clearly an advantage for Chinese speakers!
