Realtors’ forced to change plans by council decision

A real estate company in Yarmouth has first-hand experience of how council re-zoning decisions can work against property owners. Modern Realty is based outside downtown and in an area not zoned for professional offices. The firm applied for rezoning on the basis that there was not enough room in its CBD premises but the council rejected the application. The Chronicle Herald reports that the decision could prove costly for the realtors who face a $255.90 fine for every day they continue to operate in the office. They are also considering an appeal. The council say that it is important to protect downtown by ensuring that businesses are based there. A review of planning strategy is due in 2016.
