Sikh billionaire joins CMHC board

Self-proclaimed first Sikh billionaire Navjeet Singh (Bob) Dhillon has been appointed as one of the Canadian Mortgage Housing Corp. (CMHC) board of directors by the Minister of Employment and Social Development Jason Kenney.

Dhillon is the first Canadian of Sikh background to be appointed to the CMHC Board.

“I am pleased to announce the appointment of this very experienced and talented individual to the Board of CMHC,” Kenney said.  “Mr. Dhillon’s corporate experience and real estate expertise will be of tremendous benefit to the CMHC Board.”

Dhillon is the founder of Mainstreet Equity Corp. and is also the company’s president and chief executive. The Calgary-based publicly traded company is listed on the Toronto Stock exchange.

Mainstreet acquires underperforming assets like low rent rental-apartments, clusters them into apartment complexes, and upgrades them to mid-market rental units.

“I am honoured to be joining CMHC’s Board of Directors and being part of an organization that has played an important role in promoting a strong financial system in Canada,” said Dhillon.

“I have been involved in real estate all of my life and it is an opportunity to give back to Canada and to my community.”
