Statistics Canada has reported its latest estimates of population growth which shows that Western Canada is still drawing people in; or at least it was in July 2015. Seven out of ten Canadians were living in a census metropolitan area.
The seven CMA’s with the highest gains in population for 2014/15 were: Kelowna (+3.1 per cent), Calgary (+2.4), Edmonton (+2.4), Saskatoon (+2.0), Regina (+1.9), Abbotsford–Mission (+1.4) and Winnipeg (+1.4). The CMA’s seeing the steepest declines were in Eastern or Central Canada: Saint John (-0.4 per cent), Greater Sudbury (-0.3), Saguenay (-0.2), Peterborough (-0.2) and Thunder Bay (-0.2).
The data shows that more than 1 in 3 Canadians (35.4 per cent) made their home in Canada's three largest CMAs—Toronto, Montréal and Vancouver. Although 60 per cent of the increases in CMA populations were due to international migration, this was down from 66 per cent in the previous report.
