Toronto urged to allow laneway housing

Two councillors are urging Toronto City Council to approve the construction of laneway housing to ease the city’s shortage of homes.

The policy has already been adopted in Vancouver, Regina and Ottawa and advocates say it would be a responsible answer to the current low vacancy rate (1.6 per cent) which is getting worse as 30,000 new residents move to the city annually.

Ana Bailao and Mary-Margaret McMahon are advocating small units of similar sizes to the basement apartments that are already allowed in the GTA.

A consultation will be held on December 5.
