Prices may be slipping in Alberta but the issue of affordability is still a large one and the province’s new housing minister has vowed to tackle it. Edmonton-Riverview MLA Lori Sigurdson was given the role in the cabinet reshuffle this week and said that affordable housing is an important area for the government. The Calgary Herald reports that the new minister has to face a $1 billion deficit in affordable housing stock and Tim Richter, president of the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness told the paper that repairs to old housing stock and the building of new units are the two key things that need to happen.
Meanwhile, affordability in Vancouver is set to get worse according to BC Non-Profit Housing Association. Its CEO Tony Roy told CBC News that although federal funds have been requested by the city to finance the building of new affordable homes, it will take years before they are completed and in the meantime prices continue to rise. He says that people should support the initiatives of politicians though even though they are not a short-term solution.
