Average weekly earnings edged higher in April

Canadian workers earned more in April than in the previous month according to new figures from Statistics Canada.

Weekly non-farm payroll wages were up 0.7% month-over-month to an average $1,023 while their average working week stayed the same at 32.8 hours.

There was a 2.9% increase from a year earlier.

The gains were seen in 8 out of the 10 main sector groups led by an 8.3% year-over-year increase for administrative workers, taking their average weekly wage to $828.

Other strong gains were seen for professional, scientific, and technical services (up 7.1% to $1,460) and manufacturing (up 6.5% to $1,148).

Compared with April 2018, average weekly earnings rose in nine provinces, led by Nova Scotia. At the same time, earnings were little changed in Alberta.

However, average weekly earnings in retail trade were down by 1.5% to $597.

Record highs

StatsCan also revealed that retail trade, and health care and social assistance had nearly two million payroll employees in 2018, the highest number among all sectors.
