Consumer sentiment remains flat

Canadian consumer sentiment remains flat with concerns over the economy and personal finances offsetting increased optimism for job security and real estate.

The Blomberg Nanos Canadian Confidence Index edged higher this week (54.78 vs. 54.29 a week earlier) but the overall trend is for confidence to remain subdued.

So far in 2019, the index has averaged 54.60, well below the 10-year average of 56.88.

Although both component indexes gained slightly week-over-week, there were lower positive ratings for the overall Canadian economy and personal finances while the index charting job security and real estate price expectations saw a rise in positive responses.

Atlantic Canada, Quebec, and BC all saw confidence weaken while the Prairies and Ontario gained.

Homeowners and renters were both slightly more confident in the latest weekly poll compared to the previous week.
