Delinquent debt increasing in Alberta

The national level of non-mortgage delinquent debt was largely unchanged in the fourth quarter of 2015 but there are some pockets of concern. A report from Equifax shows that defaults rose in Alberta, up 25.1 per cent year-over-year. Average debt in the province is $27,000 compared to a national average of $21,458.

Delinquencies increased 14 per cent in Saskatchewan, 11.8 per cent in Newfoundland and 6.4 per cent in Manitoba. Nova Scotia and PEI saw small increases (2.2 and 2.4 per cent respectively) while the other provinces saw decreases.

For individual cities, Edmonton’s defaults rose 21.3 per cent and Calgary was up 17 per cent. The other large rise was in St. John’s Ontario which increased 20.5 per cent and there were smaller rises for Halifax (1.9 per cent) and Ottawa (0.1 per cent). Other major cities saw a decline in defaults.
