Edmonton needs to look at alternative options for housing according to the vice-president of Christenson Group. Bard Golightly, a former CHBA president, told the Edmonton Journal that the city should consider building condos above recreation centre parking lots, something his firm had proposed in the city but was rejected.
Golightly’s view is that developments of that kind would mean that land was being used twice and could be promote good health with housing immediately next to recreation facilities. He also called for better arrangement between the city and developers to get rapid transit built before the homes.
The City voted to look into cost-sharing and new levies on developers in Edmonton following a report that showed the cost of three new neighbourhoods in the city would result in a $1.4 billion shortfall.
