Ontario extends rent capping

Landlords’ rental increases will be restricted across Ontario following the government’s expansion of rent capping.

Rent increases will be capped at 1.8 per cent in 2018 unless the Landlord and Tenant Board approves a larger rise. It applies to all private rental units including those occupied on or after November 1, 1991; and for all rent increases notices issued after April 20, 2017.

The expansion of rent caps to 250,000 additional properties in Ontario was a key component of the province’s Fair Housing Plan.
