PM's official residence remains vacant and crumbling

The fate of 24 Sussex Drive remains uncertain, four years after Justin Trudeau decided not to move into the prime minister’s official residence.

The stately home needs an estimated $10 million in repairs and is currently only used by kitchen staff who prepare meals for the Trudeau family, who live in a cottage behind Rideau Hall, according to a HuffPost Canada report.

Trudeau has been criticized by the federal Conservatives who say the PM has had four years to fix the issue but has dithered; but the article says none of the major parties are committing to whether it would be used by whoever is prime minister after the election.

Former PM Stephen Harper did live in 24 Sussex Drive for 10 years but did not approve anything more than essential repairs.

The home was built in 1868 and the last major renovations were in 1951, meaning building systems are outdated.
