Calgary’s city councillors spent hours Monday considering 20 applications from homeowners hoping that their secondary suites would be allowed.
The process involves homeowners attending the meeting to put their case to councillors who then deliberate before making a decision. It’s a process that city mayor Naheed Nenshi wants to change, calling it “hugely unfair.”
“One of these days we’ve got to fix it but council has shown itself reluctant, very, very reluctant, to actually fix it,” the mayor told the Calgary Herald.
In the last few years, councillors have voted on proposals to allow secondary suites in some areas of the city – but the plans have been rejected. So for now, the monthly applications and deliberations will continue.
“Stay tuned, there may be another kick at this before the municipal election,” Nenshi said.
