The delivery of new rental housing in Vancouver is at levels not seen in 40 years and non-market housing delivery was last at current levels in the early 1980s.
The housing data is part of a comprehensive Housing Vancouver Progress Report which was presented to the City Council this week and also reveals that Vancouver increased the supply of rental housing at a level four times greater than its closest municipality in Metro Vancouver.
“With our nonstop efforts to get new rental housing built, and now the creation of the Affordable Housing Endowment Fund, Vancouver is way out in front on delivering rental and non-market housing,” said Mayor Gregor Robertson. “We’re playing catch-up for many years where very little new affordable housing was built. The data shows our efforts are starting to pay off and validate the excellent work our staff have done to make Vancouver a leader on rental housing.”
The report also says that from 2013-2017, Vancouver has the highest amount of new rental housing constructed and completed compared to Toronto, Montreal, or Ottawa.
