Edmonton is proposing rule changes to tackle falling numbers of infill developments and to clamp down on builders who do not follow regulations on noise and trash. A report from the city council due Tuesday will call for larger fines for companies that do not keep areas tidy around construction sites in mature neighbourhoods, doubling the current penalty to $500. Noise violations will also result in fines at that level.
The council will ensure that rules are enforced with additional inspectors, the Edmonton Journal reports. Edmonton’s infill rate is 13 per cent, falling well short of the 25 per cent that the city wants in order to reduce the amount of development on greenfield sites. The council hopes that by encouraging infill projects to be done with due regard to neighbours, there will be an increase in the numbers.
