It’s not easy being green for commercial buildings

Commercial buildings in Vancouver are falling short of standards required to receive top marks for sustainability.

Local experts say that despite city council requirements for buildings to achieve gold certification under Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) ratings, poor testing and operation is a concern.

“There are very few buildings that we are aware of that actually go and verify that the operational data meets the modelled data,” Sunny Ghataurah, the president and CEO of AES Engineering told the Vancouver Sun.

He added that he would be “surprised” if there are large numbers meeting the target requirements.

City Council green building manager Sean Pander said that getting data on operational performance is difficult but the council is working with stakeholders to address the issue.
