New starts in Hamilton remain stable

New builds in Hamilton remained almost the same level last month as in December 2013, according to new statistics released by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), reports CBC News.

A total of 2,096 housing units were built and sold within the Hamilton CMA during January, as compared to the 2,117 sold in December, the CMHC said in a release. Hamilton's CMA also includes the neighbouring municipalities of Burlington and Grimsby.

Abdul Kargbo, a CMHC senior market analyst for the Hamilton and Brantford CMAs, notes that the beginning of 2014 has seen townhouses become one of the best buys within the city.

“Contrary to the pattern seen early last year, townhouse starts began 2014 on a high note, as some homebuyers shifted their demand in favour of less expensive townhouses relative to single-detached dwellings," he said.
