Heritage homes in Vancouver will not be protected from being torn down and replaced by new developments.
The proposal to limit the size of new homes in single-family neighbourhoods has been rejected by the city council, the Globe and Mail reports, due to “negative feedback” to downzoning.
Head of planning Gill Kelley said that following extensive gathering of views on the proposal, it will no longer be an option when councillors vote on the review of heritage housing next month.
Stakeholders including those wishing to preserve character homes and developers who want to be able to create new supply, are both hopeful that the city can come up with plans that can address the contentious issue.
