BMO aims to modernize banking experience

Customers of BMO in Alberta can now experience the bank’s new ‘Smart Branch’ format.

The branches in Edmonton and Calgary are the first in the province as part of the lender’s roll out of its new style banking experience across Canada.

The focus is on technology and digital banking although customers can also meet with mortgage advisors and other banking professionals in the new-look locations.

"Our customers' expectations are changing, and the need for efficient and digitally driven day-to-day banking experiences continues to increase," said Susan Brown, Senior Vice President, Alberta and Northwest Territories Division, BMO Bank of Montreal. "Our customers now have the option to handle simpler transactions on their own, while also benefiting from the assistance of branch staff for more complex financial needs such as mortgages and investment products. Smart Branches conveniently provide both of these options in a single location."

The Smart Branch format is based in smaller units with an open-plan layout. There are no service lineups or teller counters.

Customers arriving for appointments with mortgage advisors will self-check-in with advisors receiving an alert message to inform them that their customer has arrived.
