Those who help people in financial difficulties in Calgary are reporting a rise in the number of people falling on hard times.

The Calgary Distress Centre says it is seeing a wider mix of clients contacting its helpline worried about making ends meet.

“These are people who were doing pretty well and now are increasingly exhausting personal savings and still finding it very difficult to get their basic needs met, whether that’s rent, mortgage or utilities,” David Kirby, clinical services manager, told the Calgary Herald.

He said that people who had never imagined having to choose between meeting a mortgage payment and keeping their utilities connected were now being forced to make those decisions.
