Canadian brokers, agents may be overly confident on cybersecurity

It may be Friday 13th but it seems Canadian firms are not fearful of bad luck with their cybersecurity; not today, not ever.

A survey by FICO shows that Canadian financial services firms rank second only to the telecommunications and IT services sector for believing they are a top performer on cybersecurity.

That’s despite only 38% of Canadian firms using tools to provide more than point-in-time assessments of what their cybersecurity risk is.

“It’s alarming to learn that organizations are overly confident in their cybersecurity preparedness,” said Kevin Deveau, vice president & managing director, FICO Canada. “That amount of confidence can lead to complacency — which is dangerous. Cyber security is an ongoing battle that requires attention. For an overwhelming majority of firms to feel that they are above average shows that there is a lack of understanding of what the industry averages truly are.”

Across all sectors polled, 84% of Canada firms surveyed said they are better prepared for data breaches than their competitors — up 32% from last year.
