Canadian wealth gap almost doubled

New data from Statistics Canada shows that the gap between Canada’s richest 20 per cent and the poorest almost doubled in the period 1999-2012. The figures reveal that all income groups saw some increase in their wealth but the net worth of the richest surged by 80 per cent in the 13 year period (from $721,900 to $1,300,100) while the poorest saw growth of just 38 per cent (from $79,500 to $109,300). The gap between the two grew by 85 per cent from $642,400 in 1999 to $1,190,000 in 2012. Middle-income households saw net worth grow 73 per cent from $261,800 to $453,300.
