College retains affordable housing in Estevan

Despite the vacancy rate of 12.5%, there is no stopping Southeast Regional College from continuing its affordable housing initiative for the Estevan area.

Latest data from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation pegs Estevan's vacancy rate at 12.5%, but suggests it also has the highest rental costs in Saskatchewan. This means rates remain a challenge for would-be residents and potential students at the college.

The Estevan Housing Project is collaboration with the City of Estevan, and supported by the Estevan Chamber of Commerce.  It aims to house both Southeast College students and other residents.

“The college is well positioned to be the trainer of choice in the region, with a growing variety of industry and academic programming available,” said Southeast Regional College president and CEO Dion McGrath. “But students cannot afford the rents while they get their training, and may not be able to find an affordable place once their training is complete.”
