The number of complaints made about Canadian banks, lenders and other financial institutions has risen since allegations were made about sales practices at some banks.

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada says that it in the week between March 13 and 19, it saw a 156 per cent increase in complaints from the same week of 2016 with 431 calls and emails, mostly complaints.

The watchdog told the Financial Post that many of the complaints were about sales practices.

The allegations made against Toronto Dominion Bank were strongly denied by the lender.
