Halifax approves affordable housing plan

Three thousand new affordable homes will be built in Halifax following a vote by the city council Tuesday. Along with the new homes, 2,000 homes will be preserved and renovated.

The plan is over five years which means there will be no fast fix for the city’s crisis; StatsCan says a quarter of people are paying at least 30 per cent on their housing costs.

The new homes will be facilitated by allowing developers to build higher if 7.5 per cent of the units are affordable housing. There could also be a move to inclusionary zoning, which would require housing at a variety of prices for all new developments.
