Homeowners in this province more likely to be in arrears

Homeowners with a mortgage in Saskatchewan are more likely to be struggling than those in any other province.

Data from the Canadian Bankers Association shows that across the country 0.24% of the 4,767,903 mortgages are three or more months overdue, that amounts to 11,511 struggling borrowers.

In Saskatchewan, the arrears rate is 0.79% - 1,033 mortgages in arrears from a total 130,544 in the province.

That puts the province well ahead of other regions including second placed Atlantic Canada at 0.53% (1,864 of 349,209 mortgages).

For Alberta, 0.45% of the 583,421 mortgages are in arrears (2,603). These figures include NWT and NU.

Manitoba has 0.31% of its 122,622 mortgages in arrears, a total of 378.

Quebec’s arrears rate is 0.29% - 2,685 of the province’s 917,976 mortgages.

British Columbia has a total 985 mortgages in arrears, 0.15% of its 644,417. BC figures include Yukon.

Ontario has the lowest share of mortgages in arrears; 0.10% of the 2,009,671, totalling 1,963.
