From the highest earners to the lowest, there’s a sizeable share of Canadians who say that housing is not affordable for them.
A new study by EKOS shows that around two in five say that housing is unaffordable with almost half of those who consider themselves poor or working class saying so, but also almost 40 per cent who say they are middle or upper class.
Unsurprisingly, this is a view held strongly in the hottest housing markets of Vancouver, where just 2 per cent believe housing is affordable; Toronto, where it’s 6 per cent; and Calgary at 11 per cent.
"It's a deeply troubling finding that in certain portions of Canada, either geographically or societally, that this is a crisis level," said Frank Graves, president of EKOS Research.
The poll was conducted at the start of June among more than 5,000 Canadians.
