Mayors not promised federal funding for housing at conference

"Today, the big city mayors are calling on the federal government to take practical steps to build stronger cities and a stronger economy," Vancouver mayor Greg Robertson, chair of the big city mayors' caucus, told CBC News.

Expressng their concerns about rising housing costs and traffic woes in their respective cities, the mayors met Candice Bergen, the federal minister of state for social development, to discuss receiving government funding for affordable housing.

After the meeting, which was held at Ottawa's city hall, Ottawa mayor Jim Watson said that Bergen made no promises to the mayors about affordable housing, adding that there was very little she could actually do.

Bergen also told the group, which included Toronto mayor Rob Ford, that both the federal government and Canadian taxpayers are already doing their "fair share" on this issue.
