No easing of GTA Greenbelt to make housing affordable says premier

Ontario premier Kathleen Wynne has ruled out easing restrictions on building on the Greenbelt.

Speaking Wednesday, she said that the government wants to increase the Greenbelt rather than reduce it by allowing more homes to be built and there will not be a change to that in the forthcoming budget. The pledge was welcomed by environmentalists.

There have been calls from the real estate industry to allow more building on the Greenbelt, as many experts agree that supply issues are the biggest challenge to housing affordability in the Greater Toronto Area and surrounding cities.

While the premier acknowledged the “huge issue” of housing supply, she said that other measures to address the problem are being looked at by the finance minister.
