An increase in the number of Canadians wanting to build homes in the Okanagan has been observed by the latest report from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

Kelowna contractors may find more customers in the area following the 14% jump in preliminary housing starts for single-detached homes. All other home types also soared by 24%, from 25 in 2014 to 31 in 2015.

On average, the region has garnered a 19% increase.

"The trend level of housing starts began the year at a level similar to the previous five months reflecting generally balanced resale market conditions," said Carol Frketich, CMHC's BC Regional Economist.

"Multiple-family housing starts accounted for the majority of new homes beginning construction in January."
