Regina tackles condo conversions

A meeting will take place Thursday (Oct. 1) to discuss the impact of the conversion of condos on renters in Regina. The Mayor’s Housing Commission is expected to look at changes to rules and align them with the Provincial Condominium Act.
The Commission is concerned about how conversion of rental apartments to condos is affecting the vacancy rate and includes proposals for a 24 month guaranteed tenancy for renters and a stipulation that any building of 5 units or more which is converted to condos must not reduce the neighbourhood vacancy rate below 3 per cent. For three and four unit conversions the impact must not reduce the rate below 2.5 per cent.

The meeting will also consider proposals to increase incentives to developers to provide more affordable housing in the city.
