Two views on heritage

While many people view Canada’s heritage properties to be something that should be cherished and preserved, not everyone shares that view and there are case-by-case differences of opinion.

Real estate developer Brent Sawchyn wrote in the Huffington Post that some of Vancouver’s industrial buildings are rightly protected. Citing the Lightworks Building in Mount Pleasant, he writes that it will soon be turned into a business hub with commercial and retail space, reversing a trend of tearing down old buildings despite their importance to the city’s history.

Meanwhile in London a pair of heritage buildings are at the centre of a dispute between city and developer. The King Street commercial properties should be protected say city staff however the owner Vito Frijia of Southside Group says the buildings are a “fire trap” and wants to tear them down to build a 25-storey high rise. The city’s planning department will consider the views at a meeting Monday.
