A $500 million pledge by the British Columbia government to fund 2,900 rental units has been welcomed by the Urban Land Institute but it says that all levels of government must share responsibility for zoning issues.
The ULI says that it is unfair to expect municipalities to shoulder all the zoning responsibility and is calling for provincial and federal governments to expand their roles in ensuring adequate zoning for new homes in large Canadian cities.
It says that there should be specific density targets near new rapid transit infrastructure and that land use planning should be directly linked to transit planning.
“The development industry is ready to deliver even more affordable housing, but municipal red tape and restrictive zoning regulations must be addressed,” the ULI’s statement urges.
