Women in construction say government system fails them

An online construction jobs referral system encourages gender discrimination according to a women’s group which has made a complaint to the Quebec Human Rights Commission.

Action travail des femmes alleges that the province’s hiring system introduced by Quebec’s construction commission (CCQ) in 2013 is failing women as employers can remain anonymous and there is no way a woman can contact them to establish why she was not offered an interview.

The CCQ denies the allegation and says that the system was responsible for 10 per cent of the industry jobs obtained by women in 2015 and that it favours female applicants.
